What to Prepare

A border run is a trip to a neighbouring country to exit Thailand and return on a new visa-exempt entry or tourist visa. Popular crossings from northern Thailand include Laos (Vientiane, Udon Thani), Myanmar, and Cambodia. This checklist covers essentials for a successful border run.

Original passport (valid 6+ months)

Must have sufficient blank pages for exit and re-entry stamps

Cash for transport and border fees

Budget 2,000-5,000 THB depending on crossing and destination. Some crossings charge departure taxes

Travel documents for destination country (if required)

Check if neighbouring country requires a visa. Many Southeast Asian countries allow visa-free entry for short stays

Book onward transport

Bus, train, or minivan to border crossing. Book in advance during peak seasons

Arrange return transport to Thailand

Book return journey same day or from neighbouring country. Some people hire drivers for round trips

Confirm TDAC filing (if flying back)

If returning by air, ensure TDAC is filed before return flight

Check travel insurance coverage

Verify your travel insurance covers neighbouring countries

Plan accommodation in neighbouring country

May not be necessary if doing same-day run, but have backup accommodation option
